Retaining walls
A retaining wall is only as good as the footing and the drainage behind it
A retaining wall holds back soil, levels out a slope, and turns an unusable grade into flat, usable yard. J Squared Builders builds poured concrete and block retaining walls in St. Petersburg that are engineered to hold, from low garden walls to taller structural walls that carry real load. We also fix walls that are leaning, cracking, or bulging before they give way.
Most retaining walls do not fail because the concrete was weak. They fail because water built up behind them with nowhere to go. We build in the drainage from the start: gravel backfill, weep holes or a drain pipe behind the wall, and a footing sized for the height and the load. That is what separates a wall that lasts decades from one that leans in a few years.
Building near the water or on a sloped lot? We can tie a wall into your patio or a new slab to create a flat, finished space above or below it, and carry a stamped or decorative finish across the wall face so it looks like part of the design, not just structure.
Why it holds
What keeps a retaining wall standing
A footing sized to the load
The wall starts below grade. We pour a footing sized for the height and the soil so the whole wall has something solid to stand on.
Drainage behind the wall
Water pressure is what topples retaining walls. We build in gravel backfill and weep holes or a drain line so water escapes instead of pushing.
Steel reinforcement
Taller and load-bearing walls get rebar tied through the footing and the wall, so it works as one reinforced structure rather than stacked pieces.
Proper backfill and compaction
We backfill and compact in lifts so the ground behind the wall settles evenly and does not load one spot all at once.
